Serge Wilmes took part in the 3rd International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Leaders' Forum in Geneva (09.10.2024)
On Wednesday 9 October 2024, the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Serge Wilmes, took part in the 3ᵉ edition of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Leaders Forum in Geneva (8-10 October 2024).
The IUCN forum brings together environment and climate experts, as well as government and private sector representatives from around the world to discuss innovative solutions to global challenges, with the aim of taking concrete action on nature conservation and sustainable development.
The conference focused on the growing use of blended finance models to support investments in nature and climate. These models offer significant opportunities to fill financing gaps and are essential to achieving global environmental goals.
«To get to the root of the problem, we need to join forces: investment needs are high and time is limited. Investing in innovative initiatives focused on biodiversity and climate action is often seen as risky, particularly in the context of developing countries, especially as some regions do not have the financing structures or capacity to support businesses interested in alternative energies, sustainable land use and biodiversity restoration». Serge Wilmes, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity
The Minister also presented the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg's actions, in particular its international climate financing strategy and its national action plan for biodiversity, which aim to respond to the intersecting challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. He also stressed the importance of aligning these efforts with international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to ensure sustainable results.
Luxembourg's participation in this conference is a continuation of the Grand Duchy's efforts to strengthen international cooperation on sustainable financing and the protection of biodiversity.
