Learning in the garden pays off
Biologist Mariette Scheuer and nature educator Amélie Brenner have been enthusiastic regular visitors to the Kalendula educational garden in Altwies for almost 15 years, welcoming groups of children from schools, care homes, crèches and secondary schools. «Here, the children learn how vegetables are grown, what types of vegetables grow here and that there are many different varieties.»

Thanks to the commitment of these ladies and their collaborator Caroline Muller, the educational garden has become fertile ground. It has been so successful that the CIGL's «KALENDULA educational service» has created another project that also supports the garden: «Léieren am Gaart - Reseau Lëtzebuerg».
The aim is to create a network of all the Luxembourg's educational gardens and to help those wishing to set up and maintain such a garden. It also offers in-service training for school staff and organises seminars and public events.
Up to June, 82 schools and halfway houses had registered for «Léieren am Gaart», and 56 % already have their own educational garden.
This project is supported by three ministries: Environment, Agriculture & Education.
